About This Item

In German. 2 Vols. in slipcase. First printing.

Slipcase shows some wear, with a bit of fraying at head and heel, some spine fading, some curling of label, a small tear on bottom of left of rear board and a little foxing on the front board of slipcase.

239-page paperbound volume on clay paper (Textband) shows no wear, but perhaps the slightest age-darkening. The cloth-backed folding case containing 80 plates (Tafelband) shows no age or wear, nor do the plates or enclosed contents pamphlet. The slipcase has kept the contents in Fine condition.

Inscribed by the author to former owner, Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, where Prof. Nordenfalk was a Visiting Professor.

Carl Nordenfalk (1907-1992) was a Swedish art historian, director of Sweden's Nationalmuseum and a renowned expert in manuscript and book painting and illumination, including Late Antique and Celtic and Anglo-Saxon paintings and illuminations. He also contributed to the study of modern painters.

He is best known for his work on Late Antique illuminations and illustrations, especially those in canon tables, which are of particular importance in the study of early medieval painting.

This is his masterful and comprehensive study of the illustrated and illuminated letters of the age just before the Early Medieval period, a seminal time in the history of medieval and Western paining and illustration.
