About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons,, 1935. First edition, first printing, and an internally fresh copy of this chilling account of Antarctic exploration and individual perseverance, with a foreword by Claude Swanson, then Secretary of the Navy for Franklin D. Roosevelt. Discovery recounts the second Antarctic expedition of Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957), a naval aviator, administrator and explorer. From 1934 to 1935, Byrd commanded a research group of 56 individuals at a camp which they named "Little America". However, Byrd himself chose to spend the winter utterly alone in a hut some 123 miles from the camp, conducting weather observations. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this did not end well - a defective stove filled the hut with carbon monoxide, and his increasingly confused radio messages prompted his colleagues to dispatch a rescue party (ANB). Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with decorative title border in gilt, printed map endpapers. With dust jacket by Paul Laune. Portrait frontispiece and 23 other half-tone plates, 1 with map to verso. Light bumping to spine ends, several spots of light wear and soiling to spine and rear cover, light foxing to edges; jacket toned, spine panel sunned and with several small open nicks, wear and nicks to edges, price-clipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.
