Roveta: negli Occhi Santi di Bice, 1820-23. Fine. 3 volumes; comprising xxxii, 617 pages (including engraved frontispiece portrait of Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio), and engraved facsimile of a passage from the manuscript, and 2 leaves errata. Publisher's "elephant" vignette on title page. Pages untrimmed and unopened. In original gray printed publishers wraps. Wraps a bit stained, especially on spines, with some fraying along the joint of volume 1. Light scattered foxing. Lovely, unsophisticated copy! References: Mambelli 126; Gamba 404; Fiske 16;
The text of this edition is based on the Florentine manuscript (Vaticano 3199) that (tradition holds) is in Boccaccio's handwriting, with notes and comments by Petrarch, who once owned it. Aloisio Fantoni copied it out by hand and prepared the text from his own faithful transcription. Handsomely printed in the Alpine village of Roveta (near Bergamo) in Bodoni-style types, few copies were produced, and they are prized.

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
