New York: Modern Library, 1944. Modern Library Edition. Hardcover. Fair/Good. The Illustrated Modern Library Edition in patterned paper covered boards and black spine cloth with gilt. Top page ends tinted black. Edgewear with rubbing through in spots to heel of spine and corners, three of which are bumped/dinged. Previous owner's name in ink and some small but dark stains to front page ends. Name and address as well to ffep. Bottom corner of half-title and title pages slightly miscut/folded at the printer/binder.Light foxing to pastedowns and some carry over of stain from front page ends onto rfep. Otherwise, interior clean and binding tight. Scarce in clear plastic jacket with title panel to front which is rippled likely from age shrinkage which is common to the jackets in this series. This one is not quite 1/4 inch shorter than book. Some small chips/short tears to head of spine and top corners with a few nicks to bottom edge. The Carlyle-Wicksteed translation.
Synopsis
Dante Alighieri was born in 1265. Considered Italy's greatest poet, this scion of a Florentine family mastered in the art of lyric poetry at an early age. His first major work is La Vita Nuova (1292) which is a tribute to Beatrice Portinari, the great love of his life. Married to Gemma Donatic, Dante's political activism resulted in his being exiled from Florence to eventually settle in Ravenna. It is believed that The Divine Comedy —comprised of three canticles, The Inferno, The Purgatorio , and The Paradiso —was written between 1308 and 1320. Dante Alighieri died in 1321.
