A short examination of the struggle between labor and capital, studying the effects of reduced wages, reduced employment in manufacturing, labor shrinkage, capitalism and unemployment, and solutions such as relief for the unemployed, strengthened unions, and public ownership. The League for Industrial Democracy was founded by Jack London, Upton Sinclair and other socialists, becoming active on college campuses and eventually changing into the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). GOOD condition. General browning to the piece. A few minor creases. Scattered pencil underlining in the text and margins.

Proposes "A heavy tax on the gains made from gambling on the stock exchange." Cover cartoon shows two effete Suits looking out the window at a gardener working, with the caption "Doesn't it make you sore to see these mere workers getting ten dollars a day when you think how hard poor great grandfather had to work for 'our' money?" Back cover cartoon compares a laborer gambling with dice ("We fine him") to a businessman looking at his stock market returns on the ticker tape ("We should tax him more").

Octavo (22.75cm.); single sheet folded into 4-panelled pamphlet; upper panel illustrated with a cartoon depicting a pair of one-percenters sneering at a common laborer. Light wear; Very Good or better. Campaign leaflet. Undated, but probably issued for the 1932 Massachusetts gubernatorial election. Alfred Baker Lewis ran for Massachusetts Governor in 1930, 1932, 1934 and 1936. No mention is made here of national candidates, so we would presume the leaflet to be from an off-year election.
