About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1929. First edition. Coloured frontispiece, pictorial title, b&w plates; coloured pictorial endpapers. 8vo, original grey grained cloth blocked in purple; an excellent copy both in binding and internally. 1930's gift inscription on half-title. In the very good dust jacket with applied coloured illustration as issued. The dust jacket darkened at the backstrip, some creasing and slight fraying at headband and wear to corners but overall very presentable. Stated "First Published MCMXXI" on verso of title and no mentiion of a later impression. However the price of 5/- appears on the backstrip of the dust wrapper and the rear flap has the printed note at head "NOTE: The Dolittle books are now all available at 5s. net". Thus this may be indeed the first edition but with a later issue dust jacket ?
Synopsis
Doctor Dolittle in the Moon (1928) was intended to be the last of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books, and differs considerably in tone from its predecessors; the stripped down narrative does not have room for any of the sub-plots and tales previously present. Instead there is a growing sense of an event about to happen that is almost spooky in tone.
