About This Item

London: Dr. Barnardo's Homes, 1919. [Children's Welfare] EARLY ARTICLE. Octavo pamphlet (24 x 18cm), pp.12. No covers as issued, stapled twice. Folded both horizontally and vertically. Fairly lightly handled, with just a few marks out outer leaves. Very good. A short article on the life and work of philanthropist and children's home founder Dr. Barnardo, reprinted in order to raise funds for the charity's fiftieth anniversary, which had fallen in 1916 at the most crucial moment in the Great War. As the advertisement states, "We ask for a sum that would have been used up in the Great War in just about 40 minutes: and we are going to use it not for organised Waste and Destruction, but for the grandest and most productive industry in the world—the saving and upbuilding of young lives.
