Sorka glanced over her shoulder, and terror lent strength to her arms as she urged the mare to greater efforts. They were nearly to the ledge, nearly to what little safety it offered from the hissing silver fall that splatted so ominously across the woods they had only just left.
Sean forced Cricket under the ledge. Suddenly both horses ceased resisting their riders and began to press Sean and Sorka against the inner wall, whinnying in abject terror. Peering around the frightened horses' heads, Sean and Sorka could actually see the long, thin threads plunging into the water.
On the shoreline, the thick clumps of tough bushes they had ridden through only moments before were no longer visible, covered by a writhing mass of "things" that seemed to enlarge as they watched. Sorka felt sick to her stomach.
Synopsis
Dragonsdawn is a science fiction novel in the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. It was first published in 1989. While the Dragonriders of Pern series is recognized as science fiction (due to its origin discussing the nature of the star Rukbat and its planetary system), many of its elements in the earlier books were primarily fantasy in origin. Dragonsdawn clearly establishes the science fiction nature of the series by defining the science behind Anne McCaffrey's dragons.
