About This Item
n.p. [San Francisco]: the Association, 1952. Pamphlet. 8p., softbound in 7.5x5 inch stapled wraps, sound and entirely clean, a very good copy. Rather than reprise Drake tails, Carruthers talks of the England of the time with a rousing appraisal of Duckess Elizabeth I. Sir Francis Drake Association leaflet no. 3. Our interest here is not the sailor, but author Carruthers, paradoxical feminist and anti-feminist: an independently wealthy and indeed charitable social activist and administrator who was "a vocal opponent of women's suffrage and a strong supporter of Women's National Anti-suffrage League." Married, she kept her own name; held strong positions in government; won praise from (some) feminists.
