About This Item

London: John Lane the Bodley Head, 1930. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 7.5" by 5". Ernest H. Shepard . The first edition of the sequel to 'Golden Age,' a collection of children's fiction by Kenneth Grahame, with charming illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard. The first edition thus of this sequel to the celebrated reminiscences of childhood by Kenneth Grahame, 'Golden Age,' accompanied with some charming illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard, known for illustrating A.A. Milne's beloved stories of Winnie-the-Pooh. The original true first edition was published in 1898. These reminiscences comprise eight tales recounted through charming imageries and metaphors rooted in the Ancient Greece, featuring many characters from the Greek mythology; The adults are referred to as the 'Olympians,' and are portrayed as totally out of touch with the real concerns for young people around them.  Celebrated for the writing style and for the world created by Grahame, in which the 'Olympians' have forgotten what it means to be young, and are in continuous warfare with the children. This was a theme that became very popular later on and was explored by other authors. Illustrated with twenty-eight drawings, of which ten are full page plates. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, minor soiling to the boards and spine. The dust-wrapper is sound and price-clipped, with some shelf wear and minor chipping as well as some sunning to the spine. Restored internally tot he wraps with reinforcements, the word 'Dream' of the title to the spine of the wrapper was hand written. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with twenty-eight drawings, of which ten are full page plates. Collated, complete. Very Good Indeed

Synopsis

Kenneth Grahame's unjustly neglected collections of vignettes, reminiscences, and inventions capture the ingenuities of a family of children--three boys and two girls--who live magnanimous lives nourished by the secret expeditions and private games they share. Written in the last few years of the 19th century, as Grahame looked back fondly at his own childhood, these sketches of growing up are poised artfully between two states of consciousness--that of a child protagonist and that of a remembering adult--and so manage to evoke both the active energies of youth and the nostalgic tenderness of reflection.
