About This Item

1856 Harriet Beecher Stowe 1ed DRED Dismal Swamp Nat Turner Slavery Abolition 2v

Known mostly for her cultural defining work 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' Harriet Beecher Stowe presents "Dred," her second novel. Although it enjoyed better initial sales than her previous, and more famous, novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, it was ultimately less popular. Uncle Tom's Cabin drew criticism from abolitionists and African American authors for the passive martyrdom of Uncle Tom, and the endorsement of colonization as a solution to slavery.

'Dred,' on the other hand, introduces a black revolutionary character who is presented as an heir to the American Revolution rather than a problem to be expatriated. "Dred" offers a gripping narrative that not only captivates readers but also serves as a fervent plea for social change, making it a significant contribution to the abolitionist movement and a testament to Stowe's literary prowess.

This rare first printing is a complete 2 volume set with the appendix of anti-slavery papers, Nat Turner confessions!
