About This Item

London: The Masterpiece Library, nd. Abridged version. Original Wraps. Good. Penny Popular Novels No. 54. 58, vi p. 18.5 cm. Paperback. Small chips and tears to edges. Owner's signature (Mrs. Andrew Porter) on front cover. Paper darkened.

The Masterpiece Library offered two series of inexpensive reprints: Penny Novels and Penny Poets. This was part of a larger movement in the publishing marketplace to produce cheap abridgements, which led eventually to the New Century Library, the Modern Library and World Classics. This is a much abridged version of Stowe's second novel, published originally in 1856 in two volumes.
