The Masterpiece Library offered two series of inexpensive reprints: Penny Novels and Penny Poets. This was part of a larger movement in the publishing marketplace to produce cheap abridgements, which led eventually to the New Century Library, the Modern Library and World Classics. This is a much abridged version of Stowe's second novel, published originally in 1856 in two volumes.
