Coykendall was a recognized expert in the field, having hunted ducks from the Montezuma Marshes, Lake Ontario, and from the Maine Coast to the Mississippi Delta. He was a decoy maker, and a judge for many decoy making and decoy rigging contests. His writings appeared in Field and Stream and other sporting publications.
