About This Item

2012. (WEISS, Emil Rudolf). CINAMON, Gerald. E R Weiss: The Typography of an Artist. Quarter vellum, with paper-covered boards and slipcase. Oldham: Printed & Published by Incline Press, 2012. 178pp. Folio. Illus. Fine. One of 250 numbered copies, this being no. 119, signed by the binder. Illustrated with more than 125 images and reproductions of Weiss's work mounted, tipped-in, folding and inserted. Weiss (1875-1942) was an influential German artist, book designer, and typographer. He was also a professor in the school run by the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin, and had his teaching credentials revoked by the Nazis in 1933, though his work was not included in the infamous "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) exhibit of the later 1930s. Weiss was not Jewish and had no known associations with other groups opposed by the Nazi regime, so it is not clear why he was targeted. Some of his typefaces are still in use today, such as Weiss Antiqua.
