About This Item

Berchtesgaden: Druckerei Und Verlag Plenk KG, 1985. First Edition. Paperback. Fine. Fine/-. Pictorial card covers in Fine condition. Internally, Fine: clean, bright and unmarked in excellent bindings. Contains 80-pages, 29.5 x 21cm, illustrated throughout with colour and b&w photos, plus special artwork and maps. Comprehensive and detailed history of the so-called 'Eagle's Nest' - the mountain lodge overlooking Berchtesgaden, constructed as a 50th birthday present by Martin Bormann for Adolph Hitler. Covers the design and construction of the house itself, as well as the breathtaking mountain road built to reach it. Sections also cover such details as, the anti-aircraft defences around Berchtesgaden; the RAF air raid of April, 1945; the American occupation of the area in May, 1945; post-war reconstruction, and 'The Eagle's Nes' today. There is even a page devoted to Hitler's Mercedes-Benz limousine. The book's photographs are remarkable, some never before published, showing Hitler, Eva Braun, and other Nazi officials in and around the building. There are black & white internal and external contemporary shots, before, during, and after the war, plus photographs of the building today in colour. Includes a detachable 47-inch (120cm) colour panorama of the mountain ranges around the area.
