About This Item

Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Melbourne, Oxford University Press, 1969. Octavo, xii, 169 pages with 191 illustrations from photographs plus endpaper maps. Cloth; top edge very slightly marked; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper a little rubbed, sunned and creased with a couple of minute tears. Signed in ink on the title page by both authors. Sir Edward James Ranembe Morgan (1900-1977), judge, local historian and sometime president of the National Trust of South Australia and foundation board-member of the National Gallery of South Australia. Stephen Hamilton Gilbert (1910-1979) took the '191 photographs of buildings erected before 1887 in the City of Adelaide, supported by full captions giving wherever possible details of the design, construction, ownership and tenancy of the buildings illustrated' (dustwrapper). Many have not survived. Gilbert 'was a significant presence in the field of architecture in South Australia through the firm Berry & Gilbert and as Staff Architect to the South Australian Brewing Company, and a leader in the movement to preserve and record the state's built heritage' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography' and 'Architects Database' website).
