About This Item

De Pere: Democrat Print.. Very Good. 1894. 1st Edition. Card Covers. Original green wraps encased in card covers with taped spine, title written on front cover. Binding age toned, detached from covers but a complete copy. Handwritten brief biographical sketch of John Penn Arndt (1780-1861), tipped in, presumably written by the author's son-in-law P. S. Loy, (husband of Emily Arndt), who inscribed title page. This booklet describes the author's trip "from Mackinaw Island to the mouth of the beauteous Fox seventy years ago". The author was born at Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and removed with his father and family to Mackinac Island in 1822, leaving for Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1824. While living in the Green Bay area, his father John Penn Arndt designed the Durham boat, built and operated a ferry on Fox River, owned a sawmill and organized the Fox River Hydraulic Company. He was elected to the Wisconsin Territorial Council and served from 1836-1838. His son Charles C. P. Arndt (1811-1842), also a member of the Council, was killed by James R.Vineyard during an argument in council chambers. All of these events are mentioned in this 57-page booklet, a unique and quite uncommon historical item. ; MCN30203; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 57 pp .
