About This Item
Durham: Duke University Press Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1957, xi, 187pp, index. VG in VG dj. When political parties first arose during Washington's administration, there were two main rival groups. The Federalist Party was led by Alexander Hamilton; the Republican Party was led by Thomas Jefferson. By 1800, Jefferson's group was called the Democratic Republicans and by 1828 the name was fixed as Democrat. Between 1815 and 1832 a struggle arose within the Democrat party between the conservatives, consisting of businessmen, merchants and planters, and the radicals, consisting of the less well to do, primarily frontiersmen. The overwhelming victory of the radical Jacksonian Democrats in 1828 created turmoil and confusion and gave birth to the Whig Party. This book is a look at the Jacksonian movement in Ohio..
