About This Item
John Arrowsmith, 1847. This is the first edition of Arrowsmith's fine map of the Eastern Frontier - it was followed by editions in 1848 and 1851. The impetus for these maps was doubtless the outbreak of two major periods of hostility: the Seventh Frontier War (War of the Axe 1846-1848) and the Eighth Frontier war (1850-1853). This, Arrowsmith's first map was published on 4th January, 1847... It was stated to be drawn 'Chiefly from the M.S. Surveys and Sketches communicated by Lt. Col Michel Surv. Gen. of the Colony'. The map measures 60 x 49cm and is on a scale of about 8 miles to the inch. It was the most detailed and accurate map of the Frontier published to date and included the districts of Cradock, Somerset, Uitenhage and Albany, as well as the 'Ceded Territory' and principal tribes to the South-East of the Keiskamma River." (ref.Gordon Richings, Charles Cornwallis Michel 1793-1851) This map serves as an important contemporary record of the Frontier War of Xhosa War period. Very good condition with wide margins and fresh colouring. Centrefold visible, with small split to lower edge outside the margin. Frames, overall size: 85 74cm
