American Subscription House, 1856. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 396 pages + 96-page appendix which is "A Description, statistical and geographical of the countries of Europe". Volume II ONLY of a two-part history, published for American readers "by subscription only". Vol. II covers France, England, Australia, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, and Italy after the fall of Rome. Forty illustrations on single-sided plates, many in color, are engravings from drawings by Felix Darley and others; pull-out map of the world. Medium 8vo, marbled paper over boards (worn along edges) with leather quarter and corners, worn at corners and along spine, gilt lettering and gilt-embellished hubs and other decoration on spine; all edges marbled, top and fore-edge faded, ripples along a streak on fore-edge as if scratched; marbled end papers, stiff stock of ffep and rfep vertically cracked but not torn through; pages age-toned, chips to fore-edge of front free end papers and frontispiece plate; a few spots of foxing and two stray pen or pencil marks observed on pages.
