About This Item

Hardcover, full black cloth binding with white, red, and gilt decoration and lettering to front cover and spine, pictorial dust jacket, pictorial endpapers, 8-1/4" x 6-1/2", in-text illustrations throughout, 326 pp. Spine ends turned in, wear to top edge of jacket. Very good in good jacket. This is one of Edwin Tunis' earliest books as an illustrator and his pictures capture the variety of Maryland's culture and contributions to the cookbook, which is a compilation of recipes from Maryland's old manor houses, inns and taverns. Stieff claimed that each recipe in this collection was obtained at its source and not lifted from any previous publication unless it was more than one hundred years old. Entire chapters dedicated to oysters and terrapin, along with various other seafood, fowl and meats along with various courses and sweets, and a chapter on beverages, of the hard variety. All of this is sprinkled with local lore, geography, history and quick little biographical sketches. Inscribed by Stieff to Palmer Hoyt who was editor and publisher of the Denver Post.
