A scarce title, the author's fourth novel using his own name, inspired by the epic *Beowulf* but retold as a story of a Tenth-Century Arab diplomat who encounters fierce Norsemen, as well as the "eaters of the dead" of the title. Filmed in 1999 by John McTiernan as *The Thirteenth Warrior* with Antonio Banderas and Vladimir Kulich.

The story is about a 10th-century Muslim who travels with a group of Vikings to their settlement. Crichton explains in an appendix that the book was based on two sources.
