About This Item

1894. A Novel. Illustrated by Alfred Brennan. In: six consecutive monthly issues of McClure's Magazine. New York: S.S. McClure, February - July 1894. Original orange wrappers printed in white and black. First Appearance of this novel. Stevenson and his stepson had contracted to write this in 1888, and Osbourne began it at once, but (in his own words) "try as I would I could not please RLS; I wrote and rewrote, and rewrote again, but always to have him shake his head." Osbourne laid it aside and never resumed it, but some five years later Stevenson picked it up and completed it. At the end of this serialization (July 1894), THE EBB TIDE was published by Stone & Kimball of Chicago (subtitled "A Trio and Quartette," and without illustrations); the London edition came out two months later, and Stevenson died that December. Here the novel is complete in these six issues (in the first issue, McClure says it will be complete in four -- which underscores the fact that RLS was still writing when serialization began). Included are (rather sketchy) illustrations by Alfred Brennan, and the first issue has a frontispiece portrait of Stevenson. Also included in the six issues are such pieces as "The Legs of Sister Ursula" and "Kaa's Hunting" by Rudyard Kipling, "The Glamour of the Arctic" by A. Conan Doyle, "Captain Jones of 'The Rose'" by W. Clark Russell, "The Sheriff of Siskyou" and "An Ingenue of the Sierras" by Bret Harte, a Ulysses Grant commemorative issue, and writings by "Octave Thanet" and by Ida Tarbell. Condition of the six issues is very good, with some wear at the spines (lettering affected only on the last issue). Quite uncommon. See Beinecke (Yale) 599 and Princeton 56 for the book edition.
