by Crichton, Michael [screenwriter]

[ Np], 1972. [2],124 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of a variety of colored papers. Bradbound in stenciled wrappers, with title revision in manuscript, and title lettered on spine. A "Second revised draft" of this very early original screenplay by Crichton, incorporating many leaves of revises spanning the period noted above. The film was released in 1973 as EXTREME CLOSE UP, under the direction of Jeannot Szwarc, but garnered little notice, even under the alternate rerelease title, SEX THROUGH A WINDOW. This film was released in the same year as WESTWORLD, the other film with a claim to being the first based on a Crichton script; precedence is unknown to this cataloguer. A little known undertaking from early in Crichton's Hollywood career, and a much less common script than that for its better known contemporary.

Bradbound in typescript blue wrappers, with small script number stamp. Slight sunning at edges of wrappers, else about fine. A "second draft" of this original screenplay by Greene, with uncredited contributions by Orson Welles (who it is said wrote his own dialogue) and Carol Reed, the director. The English production premiered in the UK on 31 August 1949, and opened in the U.S. in February 1950, with distribution through Selznick Releasing Organization. This script is one of a small number of preproduction scripts prepared for use by the latter group. The cast included Joseph Cotton, Orson Welles, Trevor Howard and Allida Valli, and the film was appreciated in its own time via a number of nominations and awards, and appreciated even more considerably by posterity. Description:
Los Angeles, Various dates but chiefly 1962 - 1963.. Two carbon typescripts, plus file of correspondence. Generally good to very good. A small but interesting file of material relating to this unproduced film project, a fictionalized treatment of UN Peace Keeping Forces drawing on their involvement in the Congo. The lot includes two variant drafts of a treatment, 99 leaves and 86 leaves, the latter in specially printed production binder, with several rather frayed revised inserts laid in, with scattered manuscript corrections and deletions. Also present is a file of a dozen pieces of correspondence relating largely to research, but as well to trying to place the project. The most significant item among the latter is a long, single-spaced typed letter to Nugent from Frank Capra, rather messily typed, with corrections, signed "Warmest regards, Frank," responding in enthusiastic detail after his reading of the treatment, but declining to get involved due to commitment to another project. Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was an American nurse who became a birth control activist, sex educator, writer, and speaker. She opened the first birth control clinic in the United States and later established the organizations that evolved into Planned Parenthood. She is credited with popularizing the term ""birth control."" Marcia Cohen's screenplay dramatizes Sanger's life from roughly 1914 through 1916, the period when she first became a public figure. Description:
Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1972. Two vintage studio still photographs from the 1972 film. Based on the 1971 novel by Michael Crichton and his brother Douglas (under the pseudonym "Michael Douglas"), about a Harvard law student (Lyons) who is sent from Boston to San Francisco to smuggle a shipment of marijuana. He convinces the drug dealer (Lithgow) to have a girl (Hershey) he met in San Francisco bring another shipment, so he can see her again. The girl gets busted, but only for half of the shipment, as the other half is taken by a corrupt cop (Charles Durning). They attempt to steal back the stolen half, but in doing so accidentally steal an additional $80,000 in heroin. The ever-relevant John Lithgow made his film debut, and Barbara Hershey confirms her status as an ideal 1970s "hippie chick." Set in WHERE, shot on location in WHERE. 8 x 10 inches. Vert Good plus, one with several pinholes in all corners, one with pin holes in top right corner.

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1974. Collection of 43 vintage studio still photographs from the 1974 film. An unusual and prescient sci-fi thriller that was poorly distributed in the US, but over time counted Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick among its admirers. Actor George Segal, in a serious against-type role, is a scientist who agrees to an experimental treatment wherein a tiny computer is implanted in his head to help control violent tendencies. The computer malfunctions (probably Windows-based) and he becomes a psychotic killer. When Mike Kaplan, a Warner Bros international marketing executive, attempted to override Warner Bros' decision not to release the film in Britain, he sought Kubrick's help. After explaining the situation, and how the film required a different marketing campaign, Kubrick interrupted with, "I've already seen it and it's terrific." The director Terrence Malick wrote to Hodges expressing how much he loved watching the film, saying "I have just come from seeing The… Read More
