KIRKUS REVIEW
This study of public schools and university education departments will annoy the vested interests in the establishment and infuriate those who support ethnic or black studies, bilingual education and other programs for the minority student. Demerell, the author of Triumph in a White Suburb, which was about integration in a Jersey community, is sharp and informed, with little patience for the intellectual slums represented by education courses and the empty credentialism of the Ed. D. The American public has been bamboozled, he says, and as usual it is the poor who are the victims. Yale showed gumption by eliminating its education department in 1955. Other institutions have made theirs a home for third-rate minds, shallow research and humbug. Strong stuff this, written by one who came into education after a successful advertising career. Like many outsiders, he was appalled at the ignorant, narrow-minded illiterates who peopled the classes, administrations and faculties of far too many university education departments. Education has become a racket in which government money is wasted and new saviors and con artists arise to hustle the public with the cliches of the day. The author attributes part of the problem to the fact that ""educationists,"" as he calls them, are entranced by methods and magic, but unlike other scholarly pursuits--the liberal arts or the sciences--they offer a product without content in which opinion and discussion are all there is. The research is pathetic and the leadership corrupted. A terrible fraud was perpetrated on minorities who were led to believe that relating to their own culture was a substitute for the three Rs and hard work. An education establishment bent on feathering its own nest had watered down standards and cheated those it said it was most devoted to helping. While there is a feeling that the author has some scores to settle, perhaps he's entitled to feel miffed; apparently, he fought for what he believed right and it is that decency which gives the book its inherent integrity.
