The Trollope Society of Philadelphia was founded by the noted bibliophile A. Edward Newton in 1929. In the depths of the Depression, Newton addressed the reading public on a project to "take our minds off" the tremors of the time. Newton published This short pamphlet which he distributed to friends and interested persons. “The purpose of this little pamphlet,” Newton wrote, “is to secure members who will sponsor the publication of a much-needed, complete, legible, inexpensive and uniform edition of the novels and tales of one of the greatest of the Victorians… Anthony Trollope.”
