About This Item

(New York): Greenwillow Books, 2017. First Edition. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. Kevin Henkes. 4to. Unpaginated. A picture book illustrated throughout. Bound in brown half-cloth over blue, printed paper-covered boards, metallic blue lettering stamped on spine. In the color-illustrated dust jacket, unclipped. Inscribed by the author on the title page. In addition, an autograph letter from the author is laid-in. This copy was a gift from Henkes to one of his mentors, Barbara Bader, children's book critic and author of "American Picturebooks from Noah's Art to The Beast Within." Her influence was such that Henkes dedicated his book "Sun Flower Lion" to Bader. On the title page Henkes has the bird shouting "To Barbara," under which he has written "with all best wishes / Kevin / Oct. 2017." In the letter, handwritten in ink on good paper, Henkes comments on an article Bader wrote about Caldecott Medal winners, and praises Bader's insight, closing, "I felt as if I spent the afternoon with you." He closes by referencing this book as his latest. Letter is also dated Oct. 2017. In 2004 Henkes won the Caldecott Medal for "Kitten's First Full Moon." A superb association. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archival sleeve.
