The great Mannerist artist Domenikos Theotokopoulos, called El Greco, created painting that electrified the artistic, political and religious climate of his adopted city of Toledo. While the artistic formation of El Greco took place first in Crete, then in Venice, and later in Rome; it was upon his settling in Toledo that his singular genius flowered to the particular climate of learning and patronage that prevailed there.
An impetus for this exhibition was our realization that recent scholarship on El Greco and his work in Toledo and on the city itself, places him in a more reasoned historical context than did the mystical, romantic and even physiological interpretations of his art that have been widely promulgated during this century.
This book was released for the exhibition El Greco of Toledo at various American museums in 1982, under the high patronage of His Majesty Juan Carlos I, King of Spain and President Ronald Reagan of the United States of America.
