About This Item

Chez F.J. Desoer, A Liege: 1790., 1790 pp. 12, 348. Worm damage at the lower gutter of about 30 leaves. Some text browning. Early inked ownership of H.F. James. 12 mo. 160 mm. Should be rebound. Francois La Rochefoucauld - Francois VI, also called le Prince de Marcillac, Duc de la Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) was a French classical author. He is best known for his 'Memoires' (1664) and the 'Maximes' (1665). These epigrams are famous for the way that they express harsh or paradoxical truths in the briefest manner. La Rochefoucauld was a cynical observer of Louis XIV's court, who saw in human behavior mostly selfishness, hypocrisy, and weakness. In his pessimism La Rochefoucauld was very democratic - everybody is a sinner. His insights have influenced, amongst others, Lord Chesterfield, Franklin, Thomas Hardy, Nietzsche, Stendhal, and Gide. This third edition is scarce. OCLC records only the copy at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in Copenhagen. FR-VOYAGE 3RD FL Language: eng. Disbound. Good.
