As issued, in brown cloth with abbreviated title stamped in gold on the front cover and in blind on the rear cover. Light wear, only. A remarkably nice copy; contents clean. Mahan was a noted American military engineer and West Point instructor whose influence is evident on the nature of warfare during the Civil War. This present work was originally issued in 1847, and was reprinted in the South when the publisher refused to sell copies to the Confederacy. It was expanded by Mahan in 1862 and is a significant work of military tactics and strategies. ANB; Parrish & Willingham 4942.

A very good copy, with some wear at the ends of the spine, plate no. 1 has some wear and tear at the open end and although there is no loss, the tear goes into one inch of the plate, and plate 4 has slight wear at the open end of the plate with no loss. This copy belonged to Sgt / James H. (?] Wickes / B???? Barracks / Baltimore / Jan 1863, all written in pencil on the front paste-down endpaper. The copyright on this copy is 1847..
