About This Item

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1900. Hardcover. Very Good. Oxford, The Clarendon Press, 1900 (ninth edition, 'carefully revised')/ 1880. Octavo, xxii, 430, [2] ('By the Same Author', verso blank), 8 (publisher's list, dated '1/8/01') pages. Cloth a little rubbed, bumped and marked, with light wear along the rear joint; top and leading edges uncut; ownership details and annotations (but see below); a very good copy. Provenance: Sir John Hannah Gordon (1850-1923, South Australian politician and judge), with his small circular inkstamp on the front pastedown, title page and bottom edge; the occasional annotations and emphases in pencil to the text, and in pencil and ink on the front endpaper are (we believe) in his hand. The later ownership stamps of Sir Thomas John Mellis Napier (1882-1976, judge and Chief Justice of SA from 1942-67) are on the title page ('Mr. Justice Napier') and all three edges ('Napier J.'). The more recent ownership stamp of Adelaide barrister Chris James is on the front free endpaper, and his armorial bookplate is mounted on the rear pastedown.
