About This Item

London: M. A. Nattali., 1846.. Third edition[?]. Two volumes bound as one. Contemporary green cloth by Remnant and Edmonds (their ticket to the rear pastedown) with embossed decoration to the boards and decorative gilt titles to the spine. All edges gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text black and white line drawings. [5], 249pp. + [3], 271pp. Contemporary ink prize inscription to the front free endpaper. Small previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. A good copy, the binding square and firm with a little cracking to the rear hinge; the spine expertly relaid, with a little wear to the tips and a minor split to the cloth covering the middle of the upper joint. The contents with the occasional spot of toning are otherwise in very good order throughout. An attractive edition of this detailed, well-illustrated account of the Parthenon Marbles, first published in 1833, by the English antiquarian and long-serving principal librarian at the British Museum Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869).
