Chapel Hill: Algonquin Books, 1987. First edition of her first book, the reportedly semi-autobiographical story of an 11-year-old girl shunted from place to place after her mother's death until, at 12, "she discovers a home where at last she is wanted and loved" (from the jacket flap). INSCRIBED BY GIBBONS on title page, "For Walter Sullivan -/ With all grades/ of/ Respect and/ warmest wishes/ Kaye Gibbons/ May 4, 1999" and with AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED by Gibbons laid in. Written in red ink on lined 3 x 5" card, it reads, "May 4, 1999/ Dear Walter -/ I'm pleased to sign/ your book - so very flattered to be on/ your bookshelves. Thank you and/ everyone in The Fellowship for all you/ do for writing in the South./ Best,/ Kaye Gibbons." Walter Sullivan (1924-2006) was an author, critic, longtime Vanderbilt University professor, authority on Southern literature and one of the founding members of The Fellowship of Southern Writers, to which Gibbons was elected for membership in 2003. 12mo gray cloth boards lettered in white at spine; 146 pages. Light bump to upper rear corner otherwise fine in fine dust jacket.
