About This Item
New York:: Putnam,, (1951.). Hardcover first edition -. Near fine in very good dust jacket (prev owner's name, some edgewear to the dj.). First printing. The first full-length biography of Anna Elizabeth Dickinson, a Philadelphia Quaker, who, at just twenty-one addressed the House of Representatives with President Lincoln and his cabinet in attendance, and was hailed as the Union Joan of Arc for her fiery oratory. After the war she took to the lecture circuit, arguing for rights for the Negroes and emancipation of women, and then to acting, and in the 1890's she was involved in a long legal battle to prove that she was not insane. Although she 'won' that fight, her last 40 years were spent in poverty and obscurity .Illustrated with photographs. Note on sources, index. 319 pp
