About This Item
t' Amsterdam: Abrah[am] van der Putte, 1728. Half Calf. Very Good +. Seven works by the Dutch statesman and poet bound as one, each separately paginated. 16mo (100 x 172m): [14],246,[2]; 94,[2]; 82; 86; 32; 205,[3]; 46pp (lacking the final blank), with four engraved title pages (two of which folding) by C. V. Dalen after Breugel's pupil Adriaan van de Venne, one full-page plate, and 63 emblematic half-page text plates of Dance of Death scenes and of court and country life, mostly by or after Van de Venne. Period half-calf, spine in six compartments between raised bands ruled in gilt, title label lettered in gilt. Some gathering lightly spotted or moderately toned, with neat archival repair to one plate, still Very Good or better. Not in Landwehr or Praz. Cats was one of the distinguished Dutch writers of Holland's golden age, but his Orangist and Calvinistic opinions set him apart from the liberal school of Amsterdam poets. Still, for nearly two centuries, he enjoyed enormous popularity. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.).
