Hardback small, no jacket as issued, very good condition, marbled board cover (leather spine, gilt spine lettering), marbled endpapers, few tables, pages toned as usual, some edgewear. 582 pp. A popular guide to emigration from Britain to Australia, New Zealand, America, and South Africa. Consists of four books, paged separately and gathered into one: A preliminary essay (Emigration in its practical application to individuals and communities, 93 pages), Australia (233 pages), New Zealand and South Africa (123 pages) and America (Canada and United States, 133 pages). John Hill Burton (1809 - 1881) was a Scottish nationalist, economist and author. (Very scarce. Excellent condition for age. No foxing. No map of Australia, as suggested by another copy for sale.).
