About This Item

London : J M Dent & Co, 1903 A fair to good copy, complete in 2 volumes, edited by R Brimley Johnson, and with 12 colour plates by C E Brock. 4th edition thus, published in February 1903. In original decorative cloth bindings with gilt titles to spine and front board.Top page edges gilt, other edges uncut. With half titles, showing that they were volumes VII and VIII of Brimley Johnson's series of Austen's works; colour frontispieces; decorative title pages; preface (volume 1); listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. All the plates are present as called for. Vol I has 245 pp and Vol II has 258 pp. The volumes have been rebacked, relaying the original spines, so they are sound and tight. They have bright gilt titles, but the blue decoration to the spine and boards has some fading, particularly on Vol I, affecting the front board at the spine edge and the lower half. The spines are browned. Both have a little marking on the back boards and fading to the central decoration. Corners on both are lightly turned - Vol I has a small bump to the bottom corner of the back board. Internally, the endpapers have some light toning and professional repair at the joints. Contents are clean and all the plates have new tissue guards. There is some spotting affecting text pages - this is more prevalent in the text around the plate pages. The plates themselves tend to have some very light spotting in the margins which does not affect the images. There is light toning towards page edges. Vol I has professional paper repair at the bottom edge of p 58.

Synopsis

Emma is a novel by Jane Austen, published in 1815. The story follows the life of Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy and beautiful young woman who lives in the English countryside. Emma fancies herself as a matchmaker and sets out to find a suitable husband for her friend Harriet Smith. However, her attempts to play cupid lead to several misadventures, including a love triangle involving her own romantic interests. As the story unfolds, Emma learns important lessons about humility, love, and the consequences of meddling in the lives of others. The novel is a satire of the English upper class and is widely considered a classic of English literature.

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
