About This Item
London: George Routledge and Sons A very good copy of the George Routledge edition of Emma in recent half leather binding with marbled paper sides. Undated, but published between 1866 and 1878. To our knowledge this edition was issued with a black and white frontispiece. This copy has a hand coloured frontispiece which is therefore likely to have been coloured later. Whenever it was done, and whoever it was done by - they have made a very good job of it. The binding has gilt lined raised bands, title label and author details to spine. It is in fine clean condition. Newer endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. A page marker is present which looks likely to be contemporary (it has left a light brown trace on the paper). Page edges are marbled. The contents are generally very clean with lightly toned paper. There is the occasional spot or mark eg p 8/9, p 76, p 261.
Synopsis
Emma is a novel by Jane Austen, published in 1815. The story follows the life of Emma Woodhouse, a wealthy and beautiful young woman who lives in the English countryside. Emma fancies herself as a matchmaker and sets out to find a suitable husband for her friend Harriet Smith. However, her attempts to play cupid lead to several misadventures, including a love triangle involving her own romantic interests. As the story unfolds, Emma learns important lessons about humility, love, and the consequences of meddling in the lives of others. The novel is a satire of the English upper class and is widely considered a classic of English literature.
