About This Item

Ministry of Labour, 1939. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/not applicable. Illustrator: Henry Rushbury. A curiously deluxe production ( in landscape small folio format ) for an item issued by central government in, we think, 1939. There are no copies recorded in any UK library. The introduction reads 'The employment exchanges of Great Britain are scarcely thirty years old. The following pages are the work of a distinguished journalist and a distinguished artist. Each in his own way shows you how in that short time the exchanges have become a friendly part of the social and architectural life of the people.' No inscriptions. Original card wrappers with decorative cord tie to spine area. Three pages of text by Ian Mackay followed by six full page plates of the following exchanges, Poplar, Oxford, Bath, Bristol, Yeovil and Norwich. The plates are attractive sepia toned reproductions of what appear to be pencilled sketches by Rushbury. They are of very good quality. The artist has dated several of the views 1939. Sir Henry George Rushbury KCVO CBE RA (28 October 1889 – 5 July 1968) was an English painter and etcher. Page size approx. 11" height and 13.5" width. Illustrator: Henry Rushbury.
