About This Item

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1971. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Second printing. Inscribed by McPhee on the title page in the year of publication: "To Mary, from Phyllis Dismore, Christmas 1971, and with best wishes from John McPhee." His classic work that shadows Sierra Club founder David Brower as he conversationally takes on three foes of conservation in the field, including Floyd Dominy, infamous dam builder as the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation A very good book with toning/soiling/fine foxing to upper and outer edges of the text block, but the pages are bright. The upper corner of the front board is bumped. Slight musty smell. The dust jacket is very good: The cover doesn t show the usual fading and remains its chestnut brown, but the spine has faded to its under-olive. There s a conspicuous streak of wear at the fold between the front panel and the spine., some wear to top and bottom of the spine, and a dogleg tape repair across most of the upper half of the back panel that s surprisingly inconspicuous. Not a perfect copy, but rarely found signed. Please inquire for photos.

Synopsis

Encounters with the Archdruid is a narrative nonfiction book by author John McPhee. The book is split into three parts, each covering environmentalist David Brower's confrontations with his ideological enemies. The book chronicles his struggles against miners, developers and finally the United States Bureau of Reclamation. McPhee blurs traditional journalism, the reporting of facts and accounting of events, with thematic elements more common to fiction. Throughout the work is devised to the contrasting perspectives and struggles within the weight of two conflicting characters.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
