About This Item
Comments: Very minor wear at bottom of first page. D-j has shelf wear.
Synopsis: At Tuppenny-hapenny Cottage in the English countryside, five elderly people live together in rancorous disharmony. Adela Bastable bosses the house, as her brother Bernard passes his days thinking up malicious schemes against the baby-talking Marigold and secret drinker Shorty, while kindly George lies bedridden upstairs. The mismatched quintet keep their spirits alive by bickering and waiting for grandchildren to visit at Christmas. But the festive season does not herald goodwill to all at Tuppenny-hapenny Cottage. Disaster and chaos, it seems, are just around the corner…
Synopsis
In Kingsley Amis' Ending Up, we meet the inhabitants of Tuppeny-happeny Cottage, a gloomy isolated house occupied by a group of old folks thrown together by fate and a lack of options. Overcome with tedium and decay of aging, the cottagers turn to malice to amuse themselves and keep their spirits up. When the grandchildren arrive to do their duty on Christmas Day, the festivities degenerate into an unforeseen riot.
