About This Item

Bloomsbury, UK, 1998. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. 1st UK Edition; x, 212 pages, illustrated, 142 b/w photographs, many by Hurley. Original covers in pictorial unclipped dust jacket. A photographic record of one of the greatest survival stories ever. Shackleton's journey to the Antarctic in the ship Endurance in 1914, where they became entombed in ice. A collection of photographs taken by Hurley during the voyage, the break up of the 'Endurance', the subsequent drift for five months on an ice flow and the landing on Elephant Island: The fact that these glass plate negatives survived the ordeal is remarkable in itself. Rosove 6: "What makes this volume especially appealing is the comprehensive collection of Frank Hurley's photographs from Shackleton's Endurance Expedition (1914-1917), some previously unpublished, beautifully reproduced in fine resolution on thick, high quality, high-reflectance white paper." This is the first UK edition. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Category: Arctic & Antarctic; Exploration. ISBN: 074754123X. ISBN/EAN: 9780747541233. Synopsis

In August 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven set sail aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic - their goal to be the first explorers ever to cross Antarctica. Weaving a treacherous path through the icy Weddell Sea, they came within eighty miles of their destination when the ship became trapped in the ice pack. For the next ten months they waited for the ice to break, but it never did, instead crushing the Endurance in its flows, leaving the crew stranded. With remarkable unpublished photographs of Frank Hurley.

Reviews

On Nov 30 2018, a reader said:
This story is truly an epic tale of survival. Living on an ice floe, stranded on an island, an open boat voyage of 800 miles in freezing cold waters and a cross mountain walk of 36 hours to rescue. Sir Ernest Shackleton saved 22 men from death by skill as a great leader and his strength. His crew of hand picked men were also of great skills and brotherhood. They all survived to continue their lives and remember the greatest adventure of all. A story not to be missed.
