The first edition of this standard bibliographical reference (a much revised and expanded version of Tooley's "Some English Books with Coloured Plates, 1935). Covers English books with coloured lithographs or aquatints, published between 1790 and 1860. Aims to include all the more important books and many minor ones, except for works on botany and ornithology, which are omitted. Tooley includes some 517 titles, covering 700 volumes, and listing several thousand engravings. Multiple copies of each work were examined to ensure accuracy in the collations.
