About This Item
London: B. T. Batsford, nd. Hardcover. Good. xlv, 234 p. 25 cm. 130 collotype plates from photos chiefly by W. Galsworthy Davie, as well as 200 b&w figures in the text. Blue cloth with gold and blank impressing. Covers worn and spine a bit faded. Small bookseller's stamp on front pastedown.
Once serving only the practical purposes of heating and cooking, the fireplace evolved into a work of art. The author traces the fireplace from primitive ancient technology to the magnificent designs of the Elizabethan and Renaissance periods. Plates are taken from some of the great houses of England, including Bolsover Castle, Audley End, and Haddon Hall. Some of them, such as the one in plate LXIV, look a little too fine to be used. And some, such as that in plate XXXVI, are now in museums, as befits great artwork.
