About This Item

London: Oxford University Press, 1960. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Good. 10" by 6.5". None. A fascinating collection of folk songs discovered and recorded by Cecil Sharp in the Southern Appalachians. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Cecil James Sharp (1859-1924) was an English-born collector of folk songs, folk dances and instrumental music, as well as a lecturer, teacher, composer and musician. He was the prominent activist in the development of the folk-song revival in England during the Edwardian period. Sharp collected over four thousand songs from untutored rural singers, both in South-West England and the Southern Appalachian region of the United States. This work encompasses his findings from the Southern Appalachians, with contributions from Olive Dame Campbell, and edited by Maud Karpeles. Chapters are sectioned into collections of ballads, songs, hymns, nursery songs, jigs and "play-party games", with sheet music and lyrics. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, the cloth is very smart with minimal wear to the lower extremities. The rear hinge is starting but firm. Dust wrapper is sunned to the spine, with some chipping to the extremities (mostly to the head and tail of the spine) which has been reinforced with sticky tape to the reverse of the wrap. A small stain to the front of the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Some spotting to the top edge. Very Good Indeed
