About This Item

London England: B. T. Batsford Limited, 1961. Hardback. First Edition. English Furniture for the Private Collector. Slight foxing to edge. Shelf wear and a couple of small tears to edge of D/J. The subjects about which Mr. Bird writes include in particular a brief summary of the historical background from Queen Elizabeth to Queen Victoria, and a guide to the work and influence of the principal designer-craftsmen of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; the development of certain specific objects is outlined and illustrated in greater detail to afford a general picture of the various trends whicxh have affected domestic furniture and decoration since the Restoration. Technical details of such processes as lacquering, gilding and inlaying are described in a way suited to the non-technical reader, and some information is given on the often-neglected arts of cloth and barometer making. The merits and demrits of auction sales are discussed, a chapter on faking contains much useful information, and a chapter devoted to the 'Victorian Decline' should serve as an Awful Warning. Nearly 100 photographs and line illustrations, many of them specially made for the book, have been carefully chosen to elucidate the text. Illustrated. 216 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall Octavo. Hardback.
