Oblong 8vo, green cloth boards, gilt lettering on spijne, with a colour reproduction of "Canterbury Cathedral from the Stour" by Dan Sherrin laid down on the cover, profusely illustrated in color and B&W with reproductions of paintings and other artwork by Constable, Turner, Monet, Pissarro, and others, Mylar-protected dust jacket with the cover's Sherrin painting, 222 pages. Henry James's articles about England were written for several periodcials from 1870-1890. They appeared in a 1905 collection illustrated by Joseph Pennell. The author's descriptions 'of the English countryside, monuments, university and cathedral cities retain remarkable freshness while his observations on the manners of the English recall other great 19th century novelists. This edition is illustrated with the paintings of Constable, Turner, Monet and other contemporaries and with drawings by Constable and Pennell.

Synopsis

English Hours is a book of travel writing by Henry James published in 1905. The book collected various essays James had written on England over a period of more than thirty years, beginning in the 1870s. The essays had originally appeared in such periodicals as The Nation, The Century Magazine, Scribner's Magazine, The Galaxy and Lippincott's Magazine. James wrote a new introduction for the book and extensively revised many of the essays to create a more coherent whole.
