About This Item
New York: American News Company, 1865. Single issue in original pictorial wrappers. Octavo (24cm); pp [529]-656; illus. A well-preserved, Very Good issue; lightly soiling and creasing to wrappers, with pencil ownership signature to front cover; contents fresh, clean and unmarked.
Perine's portrait of Catharine II appears as the frontispiece; it remains clean, bright and unfoxed beneath the original tissue-guard. Other contributions to this issue include Chapter III of the serialization of Juliana Horatia Ewing's "Mystery of the Bloody Hand"; Charles Chesney's "The Last Campaign in America"; a profile of Empress Catharine by W.H. Bidwell, etc. With the exception of Bidwell's article, all the submissions, which were borrowed directly from British and Continental journals of the period, were printed anonymously, presumably to avoid copyright issues.
