Publisher's full brown bevelled and beaded cloth, reverse lettering on gilt panel on spine, reverse and gilt lettering on gilt and reverse gilt panels and medallion on cover, blind-stamped panels and medallion on rear cover, AEG. 12mo. 154 pp. (Only 58 pages numbered on recto only, pages with illustrations not numbered). Illustrated with tissue-protected engraved frontispiece portrait of Tennyson and 19 tissue-protected full page engravings by John La Farge, Elihu Vedder, William J. Hennessy, and Felix O. C. Darley; as well as numerous head and tail-pieces and decorated initial capitals. First US Illustrated edition. The first (non-illustrated) edition was published in London and NY the previous year. . Gift inscription on preliminary page dated Febr. 3, 1865, otherwise unmarked; boards mildly rubbed, head and heel of spine and corners lightly worn, tight and square, text block and all illustrations are clean and bright.
