A first edition (so determined by Scribner 'A-369[c]' on copyright page) of Carlos Baker's hefty, comprehensive biography of the novelist Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Baker, an academic, worked on this book for seven years in order to provide the reader with a true picture of the man whose life has generated numerous myths and half-truths. With four sections of plates bearing black & white photos and paintings of people and scenes described in the book. Back matter includes copious end notes and index. --- Bound in full blue cloth-covered boards with titling in gilt to cover & spine. Jacket features Henry Strater painted portrait of Hemingway to front panel. --- A well-preserved, tightly-bound, unmarked copy, though with mild chafing to cover edges and one slightly rounded cover corner. Price-clipped dust jacket with scratches and chafing to extremities, but remains bright, intact and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector.
